Blast Furnace Slag Filter Media

Description

The raw Blast Furnace Slag material is a by-product of the iron making industry and comes from the iron blast furnaces.

Iron ore, limestone and coke are fed into the blast furnace where they reach a temperature of about 1500°C and the raw materials are reduced to molten iron and blast furnace slag.  These two products separate naturally as the iron sinks to the bottom of the blast furnace with the slag floating above it, so they can be tapped off separately.

The blast furnace slag (BFS) is then further refined through, crushing, screening and washing processes to produce the finished product.

Typical Uses

  • Since the late 1960’s the product has been used extensively within the water industry as a “filter media” material in percolating filters for secondary treatment of effluents

  • It is now the material of choice within the water industry and accounts for 80% of all filtration media contained with percolating filters

Useful Information

  • Blast Furnace Slag is a by-product of the steel industry and as such is a recycled material

  • The energy used in its production is required for the steel making process and, as a consequence, the additional energy required to produce the BFS filter media material is marginal

  • As a by-product material it does not contribute to additional greenhouse gasses, and as such is “Carbon Neutral”
